Engine Knock

Postby dano60 » Sat Jan 11, 2020 1:48 pm

Hi all, When I turn off my Helix('07, 45k), I usually hear an engine knock or clunk. Also on start up it sometimes kicks back and/or makes the knocking noise. I just try again and it starts fine. Not sure what causes it but suspect it's something
with the engine timing or maybe needs valve adjustment. Is this normal and has anyone else had similar issues? thoughts?

Thanks, Dan

Sorry, I failed to mention that it occurs when the engine has been running and/or Hot.

Run a compression check and report your findings.

Compression check shows about 125 which is about the best I could get using my old school gauge with rubber tip inserted
while holding brake and starting with my other hand. I started and shut off a few times and to me it sounds like it might be the starter kicking back. Interestingly, it doesn't make the noise every time but usually does.

have you check the rubber carb manifold ? This crack with age and lets air in which can lead to assumptions like this . it's best to take the carb off and look at the boot from both sides . Some cracks dont show up unless you re bending it .

Thanks for the carburetor tip. I'll give it a try, however, I did a valve adjustment the other day using Zoz's instructions,
and It seems to be doing much better with only an occasional knock. Much better than before.

Thanks, Dan
