Foot brake pressure needed to start

Am about to remove small plastic cap on left side of tunnel, near left ankle

To decrease brake downward pressure needed to start engine, which way do I turn that dial?

Thanks. '01 Helix is new to me and takes lots of pressure to start engine.

If you type.... 'Rear Brake Depress to make starter activate' into the search you will find directions on how to adjust it...……….GrahamH

A: If you are on the left foot side of the bike and have removed the inspection cap, with a flashlight, you will be able to see a serated round cap. With a screwdriver pushing the top of the cap clockwise toward the foot brake pedal will allow the starter to engage earlier in the brake pedal travel. Pushing the bottom of the cap turns it counter clockwise to put more lead time into the start allowing more foot brake travel.

Caution: This is a starter limit switch/brake light switch all in one and there IS a limit. Turn the cap too much and you get a brake light that is always on. Too little and the brake hits the floor with no start. See manual 3-12.

Here's a tip: With the ignition on but the scooter not running, turn the limiter cap clockwise a little at a time until the rear brake light stays on then back it off counterclockwise until the brake light is always off. Test brake start that the scoot starts and the brake light is off when idling. That's about as good as it gets.

Let the brake start interrupt defeat posts begin.

Were you able to adjust it? On mine I couldn't see squat through that tiny hole, much less be able to stick something in there and move it. I did adjust it later when I had all the plastic off for another repair (and bypassed the start switch). But that would be a lot of work just for a switch adjustment. Keep in mind that it is a two-stage switch - I think the brake light comes on first and then the start switch.

G-dub, no, I didn't mess with that screw adj but did back off rear brake adj about 5 clicks. Seems prior owner had tightened up foot brake pedal too much. And I still have recommended foot pedal spacing, so I'm all set.

My next project will be to replace leaking exhaust gasket and crush washer. Wonder if Honda dealerships have crush washers?

Glad you caught that. Unless it's a generic type part that's used for other bikes, I doubt most dealers would stock Helix parts, but couldn't hurt to ask. I buy almost all my Helix-specific parts at Partzilla, or can occasionally find stuff on ebay. Except for things like fluids and variator rollers (I use Dr. Pulley sliders) I pretty much always stick with OEM parts.

It is a little difficult to adjust the switch through the access hole being that it is really not centered well with the switch adjuster wheel. I recently found a larger plug in one of my "maybe this will come in handy one day junk organizer trays" and used a sharp razor knife to slowly cut the panel hole out a little larger to fit the new plug and cutting no lower but slightly higher and to the right so now the access hole is centered with the adjustment wheel on the switch. A larger plug should be easily found in a good hardware store. I also got creative that same day and solved the problem that many others have with missing trip and mph/kph dash reset buttons fabricating both by cutting a electrical cord end plug dummy cap protector which comes on the end of power tools and is just thrown away and never needed. I cut one of the blade terminal sleeves straight down the middle the whole length to make each button 3/16" square and trimmed the length to 5/8" I then slid a small piece a heat shrink tubbing on each piece to finally get the width closer and then shrunk them with a hair dryer. After they cooled I put a dab of contact cement on the bottom and placed them in each hole to set up. They look and work fine in both cases it pays to save some junk for solving issues. This is my first time commenting on this site and if there is a way to post pics I will in the future.
1996 Helix pure red 21,800 miles owned almost 1 year I used to own 1500 and 1800 Honda Goldwings sold them and purchased the Helix as I realized that you can have just as much if not more fun with 19 horsepower and 349 pounds instead of a 120 horsepower 800 pound machine.

I used b light to see in there, it looks like a gear on threads, I was able to turn the gear however the threads are turning also, one full turn not making any change on brake pedal!

Jerry, Honda does have the crush washers. Be careful when tightening the bolts. You could break the engine metal the bolts go in to.
